🎥 When the Big Boys Blink, We Pounce
Hey Reader,
Not to be the one to say it out loud, but I’m saying it out loud this week: my business is way up. I don’t know why this always happens in bad economies, but it does. My calendar filled up fast in January, and I didn’t stop to think about it until Q1 wrapped. Then it hit me—this pattern is weirdly familiar. 🤔
Then, I stumbled on a conspiracy theory about how vampire media surges during economic downturns, and I had a good laugh. Cue the scratchy record noise. Not to make this even more woo-woo, but my toasted marshmallow kittens, Damon and Stefan Salvatore, are named after the vampire brothers from The Vampire Diaries. And their predecessor, my soul cat Mr. Rupert Giles, was named after the librarian on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Fun fact: Giles came into my life just before the 2008 crash. Let’s hope the Salvatore brothers aren’t as diabolically tied to market collapses. 🦖
But it got me thinking... The blogging boom around 2008 was a lifeline for solo creators trying to generate side hustle income during a financial crisis. Are we seeing the same thing now with podcasts, YouTube channels, and social media content? Feels like it. And if there’s one thing I keep repeating, it’s this: Take control of your narrative NOW, not later. Just like you don’t pack a go bag after the earthquake hits, you don’t wait to build your content strategy when you’re already in the thick of chaos. So don’t get caught with your pants down.
🦕 Listen to Dinosaur Mary: start figuring out your content game now.
That’s where I come in. I’ve got a pre-production pilot group opening in the next few weeks, plus a summer workshop lineup designed to make this process FUN. Yes, fun. (I promise it’s possible!) You’ll learn to show the world who you are and why you deserve to be paid for your expertise.
Meanwhile, I’m still hunting for the right studio space in Vancouver, Washington. The grant didn’t come through this round, but I’m already touring other properties, and I’m actually excited about what I’ve found. My support team is still with me, and my cash flow is solid, which is what matters. You’ll hear more about this journey as I build my studio, because I want you to see what it really looks like to navigate the messy middle—without the sugarcoating. This is what handling your shit with grace looks like, even when the door doesn’t swing your way.
Speaking of shifting economies... Did you catch the recent moves in mainstream media? The Golden Globes just added podcast categories, and love it or hate it, that tells us something big: The Creator Economy is a serious engine. You’re either using that energy to fuel your business, or you’re getting burned by it. I’d rather see you come out on top, so let’s make some magic this summer.

A Curated List of My Latest Obsessions (Send Help)
🚫 Unbossed and Unbothered
Gen Z is at it again, this time coining the term unbossing—ditching the hero complex and prioritizing sanity over hustle. As economic shifts take hold, more people will seek flexibility and independence, leaning into personal branding and media production to stand out. The takeaway? In an audio and video-driven age, your voice matters more than ever.
🌊 No Plan, Just Heart
Sailing With Phoenix is my latest obsession. This guy quit his corporate job, liquidated his 401k, and set sail from Oregon to Hawaii with his cat. No plans, just heart—and he’s somehow turning it into a whole movement, pulling in sponsors while floating somewhere in the middle of the Pacific. If that’s not the energy we all need this year, I don’t know what is.
📺 When You’re Ready to Lose Yourself
I stumbled on a video this week that stopped me in my tracks—some chronically-online genius stitched together a full music video using clips from dozens of movies to sync perfectly with Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” It’s a masterclass in timing, creativity, and patience... but here’s the thing: this is NOT what the average creator needs to aim for. These viral hits stand out because they’re rare. They’re aspirational, not required.
So if you’ve been holding yourself back because you think your content needs to be this polished and epic, let me assure you... it doesn’t. I’m about to show you how to shine without a 100-hour edit or a catalog of blockbuster footage. Stay tuned this summer—I’m launching workshops to help you master your message before you ever hit record.

💅🏼 When Boss Babe Branding Does More Harm Than Good
Did empowerment get rebranded into a pyramid scheme?
This week’s episode of The School of Moxie Podcast is a spicy one. We’re pulling apart the shiny lies of #girlboss culture and replacing it with something way more powerful: actual empowerment rooted in truth, pricing, and emotional sustainability.
I talk about how I boxed myself into a femme aesthetic that limited my reach, the privilege gap I see daily in business circles, and what the characters in Ted Lasso—especially Rebecca and Keeley—model so beautifully in contrast.
Ask yourself: is your business aesthetic... or is it authentic?
