When Systems Shake, Creators Rise

The old ways are crumbling. That’s your cue to level up.

Hey Reader,

I asked my Instagram crew this week how they’re feeling about recession-proofing their businesses, and the response? Pretty unanimous: anxious.

Here’s my hot take: You can’t “proof” anything.

Energy moves in cycles—and if money is just energy in motion, then recessions are a reflection of energetic flow.

Now, I’m not here to energy-wash real issues. Tariffs are real. A government de-prioritizing public works is real. But “recession-proofing” isn’t something you slap together in a panic. It’s the stuff you build five years in advance. You know... like during that little moment called the Covid quarantine.

Systems, habits, content strategy, and clear messaging? That’s the real armor—and the good news is: if you didn’t plant that tree back then, now is the next best time. But don’t “should” all over yourself. That stops you from spotting what is possible right now.

In my world, that means watching the media landscape. I don’t run a Hollywood studio (nor do I want to), but I do study trends in legacy media. And right now, there’s a strong current—yep, flow again—of actors, directors, and creatives moving into new media: YouTube, podcasts, digital-first platforms.

That’s a clear signal: even in economic downturns, our corner of the market is growing.

I’m also watching where the money’s really going. Take the true cost of winning an Academy Award—it's not the fairy tale they want you to believe. Even “indie” darlings spend big to beat out legacy studios. The takeaway? New media is still more cost-effective—and it’s starting to luxe up. I predict a shift: creators will start blending high-production value into the once-scrappy podcast and YouTube space, bridging the gap between legacy media and lean indie operations.

So ask yourself: what’s happening in adjacent industries to your zone of genius? What trends are quietly pointing to opportunity?

For me, it’s the studio I’ve dreamed of since Season 1 of The School of Moxie Podcast. And now? It’s finally in motion. I don’t have all the answers yet, but I’m working on securing the brick-and-mortar space. Stay tuned—because the next wave of content is going to be louder, shinier, and smarter.

And you're going to need help to keep up with the trend toward higher production value in your marketing content.

Things That Hijacked My Brain & Ruined My Sleep...

💸 Reality Check, Darling

“You look poor.” —Anna Delvey
Middle class? That term doesn’t mean what it used to. The numbers have shifted a lot—and depending on your state, it could impact everything from your revenue goals to how you price your offers. This isn’t just about making more money (though, yes please). It’s about understanding what your clients can actually afford. If you want to recession-proof your business, start by getting clear on the money math.

🫠 The Emoji Hit Too Close

"You look tired." —Everyone’s Aunt, probably
You know it's getting weird when Unicode drops a new emoji and it’s... your exact face before coffee. Have you seen the one with the under-eye bags? I feel seen. I feel 45. I feel like I need caffeine and a nap. Honestly, when the emoji keyboard starts dragging you, it might be time for a little collective rest.

🔮 "Where We're Going..."

"Where we’re going, we don’t need roads." –Doc Brown, Back to the Future
I’m known for tossing around intuitive predictions—but even I bow to the brilliance of my nerdy biz besties when it comes to trendspotting. This week’s story is a reminder that a strong sounding board isn’t just helpful—it can be market-shifting. You don’t have to be a full-time futurist to influence an entire industry. Sometimes a so-called “hobby” conversation becomes the crystal ball. Tap in and see what’s ahead.

🎙️ Why Luxury Is a Business Strategy (Yes, Even in a Recession)

I get it—talking about luxury when the news is all recession panic might seem out of touch. But here’s the thing: in a sea of recycled content and fast, soulless production, the way to stand out is by doing things differently… and better.

Luxury, to me, means high-quality production and intentional choices that support your best work—not burnout hustle. It’s not about perfection; it’s about energy, craftsmanship, and giving a damn. When you prioritize care (for yourself and your audience), your content hits harder and goes further.

This oldie-but-goodie video drops lessons I picked up on a wild trip to Nice, France where I recorded guests for Season 1 of The School of Moxie Podcast—and why those lessons are even more relevant now as I record Season 2 and (spoiler alert) explore opening a recording studio in Vancouver. (Y'all... I think I found it!! 👀)
