Let’s not get it twisted... this week’s viral news cycle isn’t just spicy clickbait. It’s a flashing red warning light for anyone not learning how to use AI correctly.
Twice this week, people slid into my DMs to send me more viral content about how AI is recommending lower salaries for women and minorities (🔗 here). As in, generative tools trained on biased data are telling women to ask for less during salary negotiations. Pair that with this other headline making the rounds: Women are using AI at work less than men (🔗 here). And what do you get?
A whole ass recipe for deeper digital disenfranchisement.
📰 In one study, a female job applicant was told by ChatGPT to ask for $280,000. Her nearly identical male counterpart was advised $400,000. The only difference was two letters in the prompt... (wo)men.
📰 In another, researchers found that women are using AI in the workplace 25% less than men thanks in part to a system that punishes women for being “risky” or “cheating” if they use emerging tech.
Together, these headlines paint a brutal picture: Women and minorities are getting worse AI results and are using the tools less because the systems are biased and the cultural backlash is real.
Truth Bomb 💣If you’re not learning how these tools work, then you're letting someone else’s bias speak on your behalf.
